Suhasini Maniratnam (born Suhasini on 15 August 1961 is an Indian actress who is mainly seen in Malayalam Kannada, Telugu and Tamil films though she has acted in various languages. She made her film debut in 1980 in a Tamil film Nenjathai Killathe for which she won the Tamil Nadu State Film Award for Best Actress. Suhasini has won a National Film Award for Best Actress for Sindhu Bhairavi in 1986.
She entered the Kannada Film Industry in the year 1982 by acting in K.Balachander’s film Benkiyalli AraLida Hoovu for which she won a filmfare award and various awards in Karnataka and became a very popular star in Kannada. She has won four Filmfare Awards for her Kannada films and One Filmfare Award for her Telugu film and other awards such as Tamil Nadu State Film Awards, Nandi Awards and Kerala State Film Awards.
Suhasini was born on 15 August 1961 in Chennai to actor Charuhasan, the elder brother of Kamal Hassan.
Suhasini has acted in Kannada, Tamil, Telugu and Malayalam films. She started her career as a make-up artist for several leading actors at that time. She is extremely popular in Kannada movies. Her films Bandhana directed by Rajendra Singh Babu and Suprabhatha, directed by Dinesh Babu ran for a whole year in the theaters and created history. Muttina Haara (1990) with Dr. Vishnuvardhan directed by Rajendra Singh Babu , Benkiyalli Aralida Hoovu (1983) directed by K. Balchander, Hendthig Helthini and Amruthavarshini directed by Dinesh Babu were all run away blockbuster hit films. Her recent films such as Mathad Mathad Mallige with Dr. Vishnuvardhan directed by Nagathihalli Chandrashekhar, Eradane Maduve and its sequel Mathondu Maduve directed by Dinesh Babu became very popular. She also acted recently in films like Mohini, Deadly Soma-2, Myna, Sanju Weds Geetha etc. Her films with South Super Star Dr. Vishnuvardhan (who acted in 220 films in 5 main languages of the country) created records and their combination is considered as one of the best and rare combinations in the south. They acted together in many blockbuster films that include Bandhana, Suprabhatha, Muthina Haara, Hendthig Helthini, Himapatha, Mathad Mathad Mallige, School Master etc. She was introduced to Malayalam cinema through Padmarajan’s Koodevide (1983), which also featured Mammootty. Her role in the AFI Fest-nominated feature Vaanaprastham (1999), which starred Mohanlal, was particularly well received.
She won the National Film Award for Best Actress in 1986 for her role in the 1985 Tamil film Sindhu Bhairavi, directed by K. Balachander. In 1996, Suhasini stepped into direction with Indira. She also wrote the screenplay for the film. The project was produced by G. V. Films.
Suhasini and her husband Mani Ratnam are involved in the running of their production company Madras Talkies, with G. Srinivasan.
